Two Oceans Marathon

Waste Plan handled the recycling of this years Two Oceans Marathon waste stream, and achieved an 88% recycling rate! With the Two Oceans commonly known as the world’s most beautiful marathon, we realise just how precious the beautiful surroundings of the Cape Peninsula is to us. With this in mind we are planning to do our bit for the environment by changing the way waste is managed at the Two Oceans dramatically. With a recycling rate of 88% we made the 2011 Two Oceans the greenest marathon the Cape has ever seen.
Waste Plan was also responsible for the waste management of the 2010 edition where we achieved a 84% recycling rate.
The Two Oceans Marathon took over the road on 23 April 2011. A qualifying event for the renowned Comrades Marathon, the Two Oceans is presented by Nike and is run under the rules of IAAF, Athletics South Africa and Western Province Athletics. The marathon attracts 20 000 runners and passes both the Indian and Atlantic oceans.
The 42nd consecutive Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, this year’s race remained on the traditional route via Chapman’s Peak, Hout Bay and Constantia Nek. The race kicked off at 06h00.

Our recycling efforts at the Two Oceans Marathon 2010 and 2011 made a huge difference
On the route there were cleaning teams cleaning every stretch of road from start to finish. From there the waste was taken to our sorting facility at UCT, set up especially for the Two Oceans. Here all recyclables were sorted and only the minimum was thrown away.
At the finish there were clearly marked recycling stations where everyone could recycle their waste items.
The stations were cleaned regularly and the waste has been taken to the same sorting facility.
