Residential recycling

The City of Cape Town is the first municipality in South Africa to have launched a large scale pilot, and planning a city wide roll-out of a door to door recycling collection service.
Waste Plan has been with this pilot from the start and is now representing the city amongst 120 000 households stretching from Helderberg (Gordon’s Bay, Strand, Somerset West, Macassar), Deep South (Fishoek, Simons Town, Muizenberg, Kalkbay)

We are currently the largest recycling service provider to the City of Cape Town, diverting around 1300 tons of waste from landfill sites around Cape Town every month.
If you are a municipality that would like to know more about our service, tell us about your needs and we’ll get back to you.

Sorters in our Maitland sorting facility.
We are operating from the largest recycling facility on the continent of Africa where we employ 200 previously unemployed staff to manually sort more than 1500 tons of waste each month.
Waste Plan also recognized the need to keep the street people in the loop, and decided to enter into a trade relationship with the ones that were willing to participate.
We daily issue them with trolleys (kindly sponsored by Buyisa-e-bag) and branded vests. They would work through the bins of the houses that do not recycle (because the program is voluntary).
We would then collect their material at the end of each day and pay them per kg for their harvest.

We help the homeless get back on track.
At the moment 31 homeless people are supported through this program, with each one earning anything between R300 and R500 per week.

Waste Plan also has a social upliftment program for our homeless people whereby they can earn the opportunity to be employed in one of our factories.
